New Beginnings

It was surprising to see my brother's name in the caller I.D. display this afternoon when my phone surged and hummed its vibratory "ringing" in my pocket (it is forever on silent). Not that he and I don't get along. Ever since I was released from the adolescent prison of high school, we've been great buds. We just never call one another now that I live on the other side of the country. Our relationship exists in the form of my annual visits back to the mid-west and the occasional phone call on one of our birthdays. So anyway, this call could mean only one thing...

He and his wife had a baby today! Their third son and my fifth opportunity at aunt-hood (another brother, two other kids). Everyone is healthy and happy and the new little guy is named William Michael, who will be called Will, not Bill (I received these explicit instructions during today's teleconference).

Fantastic! I'm glad to hold the title of "Aunt Chrissie", yet again. I made no sweet treats in celebration of this miracle (my brother, the father of three? definitely miracle material), but I did start out on a little journey today. While my brother and sister-in-law begin to watch their new child grow and develop in their home, I will begin to watch the quinoa that I am sprouting expand and flourish on my kitchen counter. Not exactly as profound or momentous as childbirth, is it?

I soaked my red quinoa for a couple of hours in an empty honey jar topped with a clean piece of cotton cloth held in place by a rubber band. After the initial soak, I rinsed a few times and then inverted the jar in my dish drainer where it will spend the next twenty-four hours or so. I have a yummy idea for a sprouted salad that was inspired by my lack of desire to turn on the stove amidst this steamy weather we've been experiencing. In a day or two, I'll post up what will hopefully be an awesome heat-free summer recipe, including the summer squash, fennel and raspberry vinegar I have waiting in my fridge. Should be slammin'.

As for my new nephew, I'll have to get by on photos alone until I'm able to make the trip back to meet him. Congrats Dan and Beth! I love you guys!
