lummi island

I'm typing away here on the couch this morning and breakfast is being cooked for me today.  Country potatoes and chorizo scrambled eggs.  Sounds delish, right?  I'm stoked on the menu but a little bummed that I've been temporarily banned from the kitchen.  If you caught my last post, you'll remember that I sliced the tip of my thumb off at work the other day.  It's healing nicely and doesn't hurt too much as long as I don't slam it into anything (it's happened twice so far).  Even so, I'm discouraged from picking up any knives at the moment or turning on the stove.  I've also been reassured that if I should dare to take sponge to dirty dish, there will be hell to pay.

So my sweetheart is cooking breakfast today.

Since I'm banished to the living room today, I thought I'd post up some photos and memories from my new favorite spot here in Washington.  It's a tiny island in Puget Sound known as Lummi, after the native tribe that inhabits the area.  Our friend Mo built himself a house in the woods on the island and is happy to have us come up and stay for long weekends.

It's an amazing getaway.

Our visits change with the seasons and the weather, but we always BBQ all weekend long and walk the nearby beach, tossing sticks for Norman, resident K-9 and mouse catcher extraordinaire.

On our first visit, the sun shone bright and we wore shorts in the heat.  A friend on the island took us out on his boat for a day of fishing and crabbing.  We didn't have much luck with the fish, but the crabs... we scored with the Dungeness.  At the end of the day, we had 15 of them packed in ice in the back of Mo's truck.

Half went to the boat owner and two to another friend in trade for some enormous King salmon fillets, caught just a couple of days before.  Needless to say, we feasted.  I apologize for the terrible photo quality of our meal, but you get the gist.

The island itself is a quiet mix of rural farms and the sea.  Country life meets fishing village, one side of the road alpacas grazing, the other side fishing boats bobbing and swaying on the waves.

It's serene and relaxed, and I love our time there.

I've got more photos to share with you.  I hope you like this taste of Lummi.

  2. Wow, that first photo especially is just stunning... Makes me crave a tropical getaway like nothing else! Spring cannot come soon enough now.

And I've never seen beached jellyfish before; they look both fascinating and utterly creepy at the same time.

    Hope you heal up quickly!
